Our digital kiosks all use the latest technology to maximise ease of use and ensure that they’ll work well for a long time. But their best feature is one that we’ve been using for a very long time: touch screens.
Although commonplace these days, truly responsive touch screen kiosks are few and far between. If your kiosks are a dream to use, it’ll help to sell your business.
Today we’ll talk about why touch screens are important, why digital kiosks need touch screens, and which industries benefit from them the most.
The Origin of Touchscreens
The touch screen has been a thing since the late 1960s but only started to gain traction in the mid-80s, when touch screen EPOS systems were developed for companies like McDonalds and pushed further by big tech names like Atari.
Although impressive, these systems were still few and far between until the 2000s, when Microsoft released their XP Tablet, and later on Apple shocked the world by unveiling the iPhone in 2007.
As with most huge tech innovations, the touch screen took a bit of getting used to. We were so used to buttons that poking a screen with our finger was an alien concept, although this seems ridiculous now.
In 2025, touch screens are a major part of our daily lives. From our phones, tablets, and laptops to ticketing machines and self-checkout kiosks, it’s hard to go about your day without using at least one or two.
But what about digital kiosks?
Why Digital Kiosks need Touchscreens
It’s no surprise that touch screen kiosks took off. Once the tech was perfected, they were much easier to use than buttons, and even the least tech-savvy among us were able to get the hang of them. There are some accessibility concerns, as there are people who can only use buttons, but there are more that can only use touch screens, so embracing touch technology is better overall.
Another accessibility benefit is how large the screens can be. Our tall, ‘totem’ style kiosks, for example, can be floor to ceiling screens in some applications, or have one that is a few feet tall. This is great because people of all heights can use them, and ours can even be used by people in wheelchairs or that need mobility scooters.
Although touch-screen adjacent, we should mention that our HD screens are perfect for helping people with vision impairment, as they resist glare and are as clear as possible in all light levels. Accessibility is one of the main things we consider when we design our kiosks, and we’re proud to offer a wide range of features that give people their independence.
Just having a touch screen kiosk isn’t always enough to make your kiosks sell your business well, they also need to be good. A touch screen that isn’t responsive – the button is never quite where it looks like it should be, or there’s an input delay – will put a lot of people off.
Do Touch Screen Kiosks Look Better?
Unlike other digital kiosk providers, we design all of our machines from scratch to suit the clients’ needs. This means that the kiosks we produce are always as modern as possible, and you won’t end up with last year’s model, one that’s already looking outdated.
Touch screens are the reason why our machines look so modern. Buttons break up the sleek design, and they’re hard to place centrally, so they always ruin the symmetry unless you work the design around them, which isn’t always possible.
Without integrated button or button peripherals, our touch screen kiosks can also be much slimmer. This means a smaller footprint, and more options of where to put them in your application. As part of our service we assess the space you have to work with and give you a few pointers; the slimmer machines give them a lot more flexibility, although they’re actually very solid!
As we mentioned, all of our kiosks are custom made to suit you. So if a standing kiosk isn’t right, we have wall-mounted options, or larger static machines that will fit neatly into corners or anywhere you need them.
Your digital kiosks will look fantastic for a long time. And they’ll look their best if you take good care of them.
Maintaining and Cleaning Touch Screens
An often-overlooked benefit of touch screen kiosks is how much easier they are to clean. When they’re being used by dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people every day depending on their purpose, you need to keep them clean. Single screens can be cleaned in a few minutes, with cleaning spray and a few wipes. Buttons are much fiddlier, and even a bit of elbow grease won’t get the job done properly.
There’s also maintenance to keep in mind. Our team will keep your machines in perfect working condition no matter what, but if the kiosks only have touch screens, there is less to go wrong. Our digital kiosks are some of the most reliable you’ll find in the UK, but it’s still good to know that they won’t let you down because of some sticky buttons.
The Best Touch Screen Kiosks
We use touch screens in almost all of our digital kiosks because of the many benefits we just talk about. Being on the cutting edge of tech is something we take very seriously; we’ll never create a product that isn’t the best it could be.
Every machine we produce is tailored for your needs. This means that if you want to be bold with your kiosk designs, or try something your competitors aren’t, we’re the only company you should call. And if you aren’t sure what’s right for your business, visit us and we’ll give you a guided tour around our factory (every part of our machine is created on-site, especially the touch screens!) and you can browse our showroom for inspiration.
Touch screens kiosks are best for all businesses, no matter what industry you work in. So it’s time to embrace them and see how they can give you the boost you’re looking for.
